Case Study: Diesel Mechanic Business - Graphic Design

The Brief

A Diesel Mechanic business approached us to design their logo, business cards and service stickers. They also requested that we arrange the printing, as most of our clients do.

Their business name is Hardcore Diesel Service.

Their logo ‘concept sketch’ (rough visual idea) that they provided us involved making the word ‘Hardcore’ nice and big. It also included clip-art of Spanners.

Our Solution

We really liked the sound of their business name. To do it justice we presented a logo design concept incorporating a fist and spanner. We showed how it would look on the side of a work ute, hi-vis shirt and on a 1950s-style ute.

As per all logo design work we do, we follow specific logo design rules. We’ve written a blog post about this and will publish it soon.

We suggested a bright orange colour as the base-colour for their logo and branding. Some of the reasons for this colour choice:

  • Bright and distinct
  • Will get attention
  • The colour psychology of ‘orange’
  • A 1950’s style vintage ute painted bright orange with this logo on the side would get good attention. Would be a great local business marketing device

The client liked our logo design concept and colour suggestion very much. They approved it. We then created the vector finished-art, chose the correct CMYK colours and assembled the style guide PDF document. You can see what they look like below:

When we were doing initial research and putting together an informal mood-board, we spotted this vehicle online. It inspired us to consider 'orange' as the base colour.

Above video: I quickly whipped up a video short. It shows how easy it is to fix up things in images using the new-ish Adobe Photoshop ‘Generative Fill’ tool. In the past, this kind of fix used to take a bit of messing around (and time) to do.

The Business Cards and the Service Stickers:

We then presented our ideas for the business cards and the service stickers. The client really liked these as well, so we then:

  • Created the final vector-art finished files
  • The client then approved them
  • We arranged printing quotes with one of our printing supplies where we receive ‘trade-prices’.

As per usual, the printing work was completed quickly. We then supplied the final business cards and service stickers to our client.

The Results

Our client is very happy. Amongst things, they will be getting signage created soon and hi-vis shirts with the logo on them.

It’s going to be hard for people (the general public) to not see the business cards when they are pinned to notice-boards, on POS shop-counters or anywhere else.

Ideally, people will also see the Service Stickers stuck to vehicle windscreens.

The client also knows that as soon as they want a website, Facebook business page, Domain-based email address(es), email signature design, and any marketing, Local SEO, advertising, etc, they know we can get this done easily and professionally for them.

Note: We deliberately only printed a small number of business cards initially, so there will be no wastage (as in, no cards thrown away or recycled) when the client wants their website address, Facebook page, etc added to them.
