I Want to Create My Own Website

Who is this blog post for?
I’ve written this blog post for people starting a small business, with very limited business ‘start-up’ budgets. I’ve also written it for anyone who wants to create their website themselves, or is generally interested in the topic.

Some people tell me, “I want to create my own website.” I think that is admirable. I do ask them though: “Is this for your business or simply to learn how (and to use the website for a hobby project, hobby business or something along those lines)?

We all start somewhere and encouraging each other (and being supportive of each other) is a good thing in my book.
I built my first website back in 2002 with the help from a friend at University who taught me basic HTML … and the basics of using a program called Dreamweaver. This website was for a student project.

I don’t use Dreamweaver often anymore. 20-something years later and 100’s of website builds later, I can tell you that my team and I have had to learn a LOT more than basic HTML and a bit of Dreamweaver to be able to create professional, modern and effective performer websites. [That though isn’t the point of this blog post.]

The point of this blog post is: If you want to create your own website for your business (or hobby, or for the sake of learning), we can help.

This isn’t a pros vs cons type blog post, but there are a few things you need to ask yourself first before deciding to create your own website for your business:

  • Do you have the time?
  • Will the website perform and do what I want it to? For a small business, this usually involves: “Helping generate new customers to help grow the business.”
  • Do I have the technical skills? For example, “Am I willing to figure out how to setup a DNS?” [What is a DNS].
  • Do I understand ‘end-user/website visitor online behaviour” and design psychology?
  • Do I know which hosting to choose? [Cheap hosting does not mean ‘good’ hosting by the way. Note: The hosting you choose MATTERS a LOT!]
  • Do I have solid marketing skills?

If you REALLY want to set up your own website for your business in order to save money, or for some other reason, we can help you set it up. This will ensure:

  • You avoid the traps
  • Avoid wasting hours upon hours pulling your hair out, getting stressed, frustrated, getting a headache, etc
  • We will share with you which website building tools, platforms and hosting services are worth using and which are NOT (AND should be avoided at all costs)! This too ensures you’re building the website with the right foundation, so the website will do well when it comes time to do the SEO work and other ‘business growth work’. [Word of warning: Website builder tools are NOT created equal. Some are really bad]
  • Show you how to write website text/content effectively
  • Teach and tutor you about important things like end-usability, Core Web Vitals, PageSpeed, SEO, funnels and many other things you need to know, in order to create an effective business website
  • We can also fix any technical issues quickly. They are things that might take you 8+ hours to troubleshoot and fix, but would take us 5 minutes.
  • Help you save time
  • Do all the technical things that need to be done, including the DNS configuration
  • Register the Domain Name
  • Set up the website hosting
  • If and when the website forms don’t send or deliver to your email, we can fix this too. [Info about this is here]
  • and a LOT more

All of which will save you time, money and help you avoid stress.

It also means you don’t have to pay for short courses on Udemy, read text books, watch extensive tutorial videos on YouTube, going to TAFE, doing marketing courses and every other thing needed in order to create a quality professional performer business website.

Of course, you could simply hire us to create your website for you, like most of our clients do, but we know the economy is tough right now, and saving money where able is of great benefit.

I’m not trying to sway you one way or the other. No matter what you choose to do, we’re here to help (if you would like it).

Do note though, that a professionally crafted website is a business investment and will directly help grow your business. If money is a challenge at the moment, we provide no-interest repayment plans.

Please also note: Many SaaS website builder tools (including AI tools) don’t provide business-grade email. I can think of at least 5 clients who built their websites themselves, but have their business-grade email hosted with us, because the SaaS builder tools they chose (before they knew we existed) did not supply an email solution. Most of them were then referred to us to help them.

Additional things worth noting:

Over the years, most of our clients have commissioned us to create their website for them, however some have asked us to help them setup their own website themselves.

They simply agreed to pay a ‘tutoring fee’. Due to confidentially I won’t say the names of these clients, nor share their websites. I will say though that they found the process MUCH easier than trying to set up their website themselves. Some had the determination and time to complete the project. Others had us finish the website project for them.

A professionally strategically planned business website is not thrown together in 5 minutes. Sure, anyone can create a Wix account and launch something pretty quickly, but I can tell you that is a FAR-CRY from being a professional website that is going to perform for a business.

Even the pre-launch, launch and initial post-launch stage of a website project takes several hours. Google Analytics needs to be set up, a robots.txt file needs to be added, links need to be checked, DNS settings sometimes need to be double-checked (or tweaked), testing on mobile phones needs to be done and a LOT more.

If you do though want to create your website yourself, contact us and tell us about your project and desired outcomes. We will be happy to assist.

PS. I’ve included a short video below that explains what Core Web Vitals are. They are more important than what you might think:
