Blogging for Business Tips

If you’re reading this blog post you’re possibly either already blogging on your business website or are thinking about starting. Therefore I won’t write a definition of what ‘blogging for business’ is. If however you’re not sure, it’s easy to Google it.

This blog post is all about providing tips for more effective blogging for business results, so you gain even more benefit from it. This isn’t a standard 300 – 2000 word blog post. This is a comprehensive resource. I have therefore included a Table of Contents:

What's the main benefit of blogging for business?

Effective ‘blogging for business’ can and does dramatically aid your website, your website visitor traffic driving strategies (traffic acquisition), business discovery, marketing efforts and sales. It increases sales!

Imagine owning a website that ONLY gets:

  • One or two enquiries per month
  • A dozen or so (if that) sales per month (if it’s an online shop)

Now imagine owning a website that:

  • Attracts 15+ (and potentially a LOT more) quality enquiries per week
  • 200+ sales per month (if it’s an online shop and/or includes a product catalogue)

Correctly done ‘Blogging for business’ helps achieve results similar to or even better than the latter!*

* This is a generalised statement. Your results may differ, especially if not done correctly and/or if your website is not a performer website.

Do people still read blog posts?

The answer is ‘yes’. People do still read blog posts. People still use Google to find information, solve problems, do research, etc. Therefore, yes, people do still read blog posts IF the blog posts are of benefit to them.

What a lot of people don’t do anymore is read ‘personal blog posts’. Personal blog posting was popular in the early 2000’s (and till around 2010). However once people starting vlogging on YouTube, posting to Facebook, etc, fewer people started reading and writing personal blog posts.

There is a BIG difference between ‘blogging for business’ and ‘personal blogging’. I’ve written more about this further down this blog post.

Please note: This blog post is long. I’m well aware of this. There is a valid reason for this, and it relates to Google. I mention this at the end of the this blog post.

The information in this blog posts is very useful if you are wanting more traffic to your website. I suggest writing notes as you read it.

How to blog for business?

There are ways of doing ‘blogging for business’ that are highly effective, however there are also ways that will not help at all (and can even hurt your website and business. Learn about Google Penalties and why they should be avoided here).

You need to make sure you are learning the ways that will help, not hurt.

It is best to contact a blogging for business SEO expert. They will guide you, tutor you, share tips, teach you many amazing strategies, check your work, provide you with feedback and help turn you into a great blog writer. They will coach you.

Reading this blog post fully will also help you learn how to successfully blog for business. It is not a full tutorial, since that would make this blog post MASSIVE in length, but it certainly provides helpful tips.

When you ‘blog for business’ please though avoid the following things at all cost (they will hurt you):

  • Hiring low cost blog writers. They tend to churn out low quality blog posts that may read ok, but are often plagiarised. These people are trying to make a ‘quick buck’ by hoodwinking you. Google checks for plagiarised content. If this is found on your website it hurts your website… and can even result in a penalty.
  • Relying purely on AI tools to write blog posts for you. More info about this topic is here.
  • Not taking the time to write blog posts effectively. Blogging is about quality not quantity.

Crafting a successful blog post requires careful planning and execution. It’s handy to have a checklist throughout the process so you know you haven’t missed out on any important parts of the process. Here’s a guide to help you through each step:

  • Define your target audience
  • For each blog post, choose a compelling topic that solves a common problem that your ‘ideal potential customer audience’ has
  • Ensure the topic is directly related to one of your services or products (or product categories)
  • Conduct keyword research
  • Create a detailed outline for clarity and coherence
  • Put in the effort. Like anything, practice makes perfect. You might find blog writing is a slow-ish process to begin with, but if you stick with it for 12+ months, you will find it gets easier and faster.

Even though the below video relates to YouTubing/ vlogging, the info in it about how to define your target audience (ideal viewers/ ideal readers) is worth watching:

Writing and editing:

  • Write very effective headlines (titles)
  • Write engaging introductions
  • Use clear and concise language – no jargon!
  • Write your blog posts in a way that are easy to read and understand
  • Break up text with headings and sub-headings
  • Support your points with evidence
  • You can also hire a ‘SEO blog writing expert’ to write or co-write blog posts with you
  • Try and utilise a schedule (an editorial calendar). Aim to publish one blog post per week, month or every 2 months. Set aside time for the research and writing process, along with the publication and promotion work
  • Blogging has a compounding effect. The more quality blog posts in your website the better. Even if you only publish one blog post per month, over 24 months you’ll have 24 blog posts.
  • Don’t release a blog post until you are happy with it. Ask people in your inner-circle (trusted team) for feedback before publishing it to the world.
  • Ensure your blog posts are fully proofread
  • Write for a year 9 reading level; the same as what Newspapers do. Have you ever tried to read a book that tries to be overly tricky in the way it is written? It’s hard to read and in some cases, annoying enough to stop you reading the book. It’s the same thing with blogging. Be mindful of this when writing blog posts.

Publishing:

  • Ensure the paragraph text size is easy to read. Same too for headings and sub-headings
  • Make the content width of your blog posts around 750 pixels wide (or a bit wider) when viewed on a desktop or laptop computer. This displays fewer words per line and makes blog posts easier to read
  • Consider adding engaging photos, graphs, diagrams, charts, stats, etc. They make blog posts more visually interesting. Add these types of elements only if you have the time.
  • Use pull-quotes, testimonials, videos, etc when able (and when time and budget allows) and other content types to further communicate your core messages (key points)
  • If inclined to do so, you can turn content from your blog posts into books, short books, eBooks, YouTube content, TikTok content, etc.
  • Share your best blog posts to your social media channels from time to time. Learn other ways to promote and share your blog posts too.

It is a very good idea to also ‘SEO optimise’ each of your blog posts to ensure they reach a wider audience organically.

Useful tools

If you don’t know how to write an effective ‘ideal customer buyer persona’, this is the first step. Jump on YouTube to learn. Then write at least one. You’ll want to refer to this now and into the future to aid your blog writing and also all other aspects of your business marketing.

Other tools to use:

  • SEMRush: you can monitor each of your blog posts to see how they are ranking in Google (and other search engines) for the keyword phrases you have optimised each blog post for. SEMRush is also great at helping with many other aspects of blogging and SEO.
  • SurferSEO: Use this tool to help generate topical maps, content auditing and a lot more.
  • CrazyEgg: This tool helps you find out if people are reading all of your blog posts or not. It provides heatmaps and other tools that are of great benefit.
  • Google Analytics: It is a free tool and allows you to see exactly how many visitors (traffic) each of your blog posts have bought to your website each month. It also provides a LOT more visitor data.

Important notes (and tips)

Here are a few notes and additional tips:

  • If your blog posts are technical in nature and/or can ‘date’, it is important to review your blog posts every now and again and update them with correct, up-to-date accurate information.
  • Learn about something called ‘search intent
  • You can also further enhance blog posts with additional graphics, videos, etc over time. Blog posts are not ‘set and forget’.
  • Write a list of all your main products and services. Then over the coming months (and years), focus on writing excellent blog posts related to each.
  • Cross-link your blog posts. This is referred to as internal linking. Search YouTube to learn more about this or contact me.
  • Read other blog posts on other business websites. You’ll soon get a feel for the difference between well written (and well formatted) blog posts, vs poorly written ones.

There are many, many other tips I can teach you. I’ve written some more further down in this blog post.

Unexpected opportunties that blogging for business can bring

If you consistently and/or regularly ‘blog for business’ you’re going to get really good at it. As I have said previously, and as we all know: practice makes perfect.

You’ll also start to grow a great library of amazing blog content that will be of HIGH value to other people. You will become the author of a very valuable information resource.

Givers-gain in this world. There are even books about this.
The more you give, the more you get back.

Some of the unexpected opportunities that blogging for business can provide include:

Plus if you have visions of becoming a YouTuber, learning to blog first is safer, you learn how to write compelling content, that then helps you learn how to write compelling video scripts.  You also learn how to write and talk succinct… and get your key messages across effectively.

Blogging for business also helps with:

  • Refining your sales skills

Blogging for business vs personal blogging

There is a BIG difference between ‘blogging for business’ and ‘personal blogging’.

Blogging for business builds authority. It proves to people (and Google) that:

  • You know your stuff
  • You’re a problem solver
  • You have the solutions to the problems your idea customer types face
  • You’re answering questions people search in Google (and other search engines). This is referred to as ‘long-tail keyword phrase targeting’). Look this up on YouTube to learn more about it.
  • You’re showing that you provide ‘value’ to those you serve. Eg. You sell quality products that last. You provide best quality services that save your customers money long-term, etc. Read the scenario on this post to learn more about this.)
  • You’re pulling back the curtains to explain how you go about specific activities, and showing your expertise
  • Your business is trustworthy
  • Your business is better than your direct competitors

When it comes to gaining growth online, it is also important to learn about an acronym called E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). For more information about it, this blog post is worth a read.

When it comes to gaining growth online, it is also important to learn about an acronym called E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness). For more information about it, this blog post is worth a read.

E-E-A-T should be considered when planning a website, or planning to grow or improve a website and/or when blogging.

Let’s for a moment use my own Green Valley Digital website as an example. This is how we include E-E-A-T into the website:

  • Experience: We blog to prove our level of experience, we mention our years of experience a LOT in this website and we include project case studies. Plus we show visual examples of our work.
  • Expertise: As per above. We also provide free resources.
  • Authoritativeness: We blog, and then blog some more. We also include client testimonials throughout our website, including a dedicated testimonials page.
  • Trustworthiness: We include Google Star Reviews on many pages of this website, plus a Google Star Review badge in the footer of every page. The testimonials, case studies, etc also help. We additionally have client video testimonials coming soon.

All that we do on this website is intentional. We do the same thing when creating, re-designing and/or improving websites for our clients.

Blogging for business is all about showing E-E-A-T, demonstrating ‘proof to support your claims’ and helping others. Anyone can write anything online… BUT it is the ‘proof’ and REAL insightful (useful) information that helps turn a website visitor into a potential new customer.

Here are some more ‘blogging for business’ tips:

  • Put yourself in the shoes of your ideal prospective customer types. What do they care about, what do they want to know, and what are their concerns, challenges and problems that YOU (your business) can help them overcome?
  • Thinking about how potential customers will evaluate your business purely based on your website.
  • Thinking about the questions of potential new customers. Address them and answer them.

Remember: People are making judgements about your business by looking at your website. Ask yourself honestly: Is your website currently a great representative of your business… or does it need work? If your blogging efforts are not working, ask a blogging expert to review what you are doing. Also make sure your website is a performer website.

If you’re not sure if your website is or isn’t a performer website, ask us to do a free audit of your website.

What is Personal Blogging

‘Personal blogging’ is entirely different to ‘blogging for business’. Personal blogging is about:

  • Posting updates and news about your life, your business, etc
  • These types of posts are ‘about you’ and are not solving problems and/or sharing useful information

These type of ‘personal blog posts’ are ‘web logs’, which is where the name ‘blogging’ came from in the late 1990’s. They might be of benefit to you and serve as a journal, but they’re not going to move the growth needle in your business.

If you want to write ‘personal blog posts’ online I suggest:

  • Only doing this once in a while on your business website. As in, for every 5 or 8 ‘blogging for business’ blog posts, include one ‘personal blog’ that might be a general update about recent goings-on in your business. This is a good ratio. Put them in a category called ‘Blog’. This is what I do, and what I teach others to do.
  • Or set up a separate ‘personal blog’ website where you can write personal blog posts as often as you like. You can use a service like WordPress.com for this, or set up an actual WordPress website (or hire a professional to set it up for you).

Some additional tips when writing 'blogging for business' blog posts

Blog writing is not effective if it is not well presented. If the presentation of a blog post does not look good, fewer people (if any) will read your blog posts fully. Some may just ‘skim-read’, others may ONLY ‘glance’ and some just won’t even bother.

Presentation is key!

Also, if you feel you’re not a good writer, there are many ways to improve and overcome this. As mentioned earlier in this blog post, having a blogging coach helps. The good ones can provide MANY tips and methods to help you improve. Here are just a few tips:

  • Ensure that your blog posts look attractive and are easy to read. Blog posts that are poorly designed and poorly formatted on the page are off-putting. Help people avoid getting tired eyes and/or bored. Include more visuals. Make your blog posts visually interesting. Also refer back to everything else I spoke about in the ‘publishing’ section of this blog posts, including font sizes.
  • Start writing short 300 word blog posts to begin with. Get good at this FIRST. Focus on writing useful and interesting 300 word blog posts, before trying to tackle longer ones. Start with the training wheels on and get confident writing ‘short’ before starting to write ‘long’. After all: a long poorly written blog post won’t get read.
  • Learn about ‘word value’. It’s harder to convey something in fewer words, than many words, BUT people remember short punchy sentences and paragraph WAY more so than waffle.

Here are some more tips

  • Think of someone specific and write your blog post(s) to that person. Ensure that person is a good representative of the audience you wish to write to. We’re all used to writing emails. If you write blog posts similar to the way you write an email, this helps gets the ideas out of your head and onto the page. You can then add sub-heading and restructure the blog post to make it very scan readable. If you do this for long enough, you’ll start seeing dramatic improvements in your blog writing abilities.
  • Write the way you speak. Forgot about all the ‘sentence structure’ stuff they taught us in primary school and high school. People don’t speak like that. To engage people, you need to write in a conversational and interesting manner. Write for people to enjoy, not to get a good grade with your high school English teacher.
  • Quality not quantity. Each blog post is a reflection of your business. If each of  your blog posts are useful, informative, etc, that is a BIG tick for your business. Don’t add blog posts for the sake of adding them.
  • Don’t treat it as chore. Instead, do it because you want to share your knowledge and help others. After all, this is why the internet was invented; to share useful content with others.
  • Before publishing a blog post, read it on your mobile phone. Not only is this a good way to check for typos, it is a GREAT way to make sure your words flow well; that each sentence sounds good; that it flows logically and paragraphs are not too long.
  • Struggling to think of topic ideas: You can use tools like those mentioned in this blog post. Or just ask yourself: “What are the major questions the bulk of your customers ask?” and/or “What would they want to know?” And if you really want to make an impression, come up with topics that they may not even consider, but they really should know about. Or contact a ‘blogging for business expert’. I can easily come up with 50 or more blog topics for ANY business very quickly.
  • Find a good Proofreader. Try and reduce the amount of typos in your blog posts as much as possible. No typos or spelling errors is best. Alaos ask your proofreader to provide general feedback; especially if they have editorial skills.
  • A good content Editor is also worthwhile. They can help you refine your blog posts.

Remember the saying: “Rome was not built in a day.” One blog post does not always flow out of you in one sitting/writing session. Sometimes you need to do some research, write a draft, save it as ‘draft’, review it, modify it, do some more research, give your brain time to think about it, find credible sources of information to link to, get feedback, etc.

Give yourself permission to work on a blog post over a period of days. One or two hours here and there and you’ll have a GREAT quality blog post written before you know it!

Please also note:

  • It is a good idea to look at your Google Analytics (GA) data each month. It’s a great feeling when you can see that REAL people are actually reading your blog posts. It’s also encouraging. If you don’t know how to read the GA data, ask an expert to help you (and/or teach you).
  • If you’re time-poor and/or not in front of a computer often: Audio record your blog posts to your phone. Record parts of your blog post as they come to you. Then use a service like rev.com to transcribe your audio recordings to text. All you then need to do is assemble the transcribed words into a flowing blog post.
  • Look at your Google Analytics data to see how many visitors each of your blog posts bring to your website, which blog posts are the most popular, etc.

Conclusion

Blogging for business builds trust, credibility and authority.

It directly makes you more money. It can also lead to many other opportunities mentioned in this blog post.

Blogging might sound like a lot of work,  but it really isn’t if you learn good processes, good techniques, etc.

If you keep your eye on the prize it gets even easier. Over time you will see initial results. Hopefully this then encourages you to stick with it and take it further. You might even start to decide to blog weekly instead of monthly (or every 2 months).

Blogging for business has a compounding snow-ball effect! The more you do it, the more it helps build your Domain Authority and amount of traffic to your website.

Unlike many other forms of marketing and advertising, blogging for business does not cost heaps of money. It just requires a bit of time.

Remember too: If you don’t have time, you can hire an expert blogging for business SEO content writer to write for you and/or with you collaboratively.

Why is this blog post so long?

For full transparency, this blog post is long because:

  • I wanted to ensure it provided comprehensive useful information.
  • It is also a blog post that I want to see do well in Google.

I could have broken up this blog post into several shorter blog posts, however this type of ‘long form’ blog post can do well in Google (due to their algorithm).

At one point in this blog post I mentioned “long-tail keyword phrase targeting.” I am aiming for this blog post to appear on page 1 in Google.com.au when people search “blogging for business tips”.
